The Complete Guide to Room Dividers
(Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy)

Room dividers are one of the smartest ways to transform your space whether you want better privacy, improved temperature control, or a quieter home office.

If you're just getting started, don’t worry. We’ll walk you through the entire process step-by-step so you know exactly what to expect when choosing the right room divider for your home.

First Things First: What Will a Room Divider Cost?

For most people, budget is the starting point and that makes sense.

The cost of a room divider depends on a few key factors:

  • Size of the opening
  • Type of system (sliding, folding, stacking)
  • Materials and finishes
  • Installation requirements

Once we have a few details from you, we can provide a ballpark estimate to see if it fits within your budget.

Step 1: Measure Your Space

To get started, we’ll need:

  • Width of the opening
  • Height from floor to ceiling

Don’t worry about being 100% exact at this stage - approximate measurements are fine for an initial quote.

Step 2: Send Us Photos of the Area

Photos help us understand your space far better than measurements alone.

Upload a few images via our contact form showing:

  • The full opening
  • The ceiling area
  • The surrounding walls and floor

This allows us to identify any potential challenges early and recommend the best solution.

Step 3: Choose Your Opening Style

Now for the fun part—how do you want your room divider to operate?

The two most common options are:

Stacking to one side – All panels slide and stack neatly to one side

Centre opening – Panels split in the middle and stack to both sides

Each option has its own advantages depending on your layout and how often you’ll open the space.

👉 Tip: Check out the animations on our website to see exactly how each system works.

Step 4: Top Hung Track vs Bottom Track

This is a crucial decision that many people overlook.

Top Track (No Floor Track)

  • Clean, seamless look
  • No tripping hazards
  • Ideal for open-plan living

Important: A top track must be fixed to something solid.

In most cases, a bulkhead or header in place or having perpendicular ceiling beams are installed to:

  • Support the track
  • Hide the mechanism
  • Drop below the cornice if needed

Bottom Track  (7mm ramped - non trip)

  • Easier installation
  • No structural support required above
  • Often more cost-effective
  • We’ll help you decide which option works best based on your space.

Step 5: Select Panels, Inserts & Finishes

This is where your room divider becomes uniquely yours.

You’ll choose:

  • Panel type (melamine or glass or a combination)
  • Insert materials (opaque, reed or clear glass, timber-look, or solid colour)
  • Frame finish (powder-coated colours or natural aluminium)

Your selections will impact not only the look but also privacy, sound reduction, and light flow.
