We recently completed an installation in Melton, a growing suburb on the outskirts of Melbourne, where our client wanted to convert an open-plan area into a guest bedroom. With family visiting regularly and the need for a semi-private space becoming more pressing, they reached out to us for a solution that didn’t involve a full renovation.
The Brief
The client needed to enclose a generous opening—2559mm high by 4087mm wide—while maintaining light flow and a modern look that would blend in with the rest of their home. The area needed to be fully functional as a guest room but without the cost or permanence of a fixed wall.
We suggested our A100 Series 2 Fixed / 2 Sliding Bypass system, a versatile and sleek design that’s perfect for residential applications like this. After viewing samples and discussing finishes, the client chose a Natural Anodised Aluminium frame and hardware, paired with White Translucent 6.38mm Laminated Glass inserts—a combination that offers both privacy and light diffusion.
Design Details
This installation featured a 4-panel design—two fixed panels and two sliding panels. The fixed panels provided the structural stability and design continuity the client was after, while the sliding panels offered flexible access and easy operation.
The white translucent laminated glass was a smart choice. At 6.38mm, it provides excellent acoustic and visual separation, without making the new guest room feel boxed in. Light still passes through, which keeps the room feeling open and bright, even with the doors shut.
Site-Specific Challenges
Like many homes, this one wasn’t built perfectly square—particularly at the floor-to-ceiling line. To overcome this, our installers made subtle adjustments to ensure the track and panels sat flush and operated smoothly. These are the kinds of real-world conditions we encounter often, and it’s where experience and attention to detail really count.
To finish the install cleanly, we added a white melamine bulkhead just below the existing cornice line. This not only gave the divider a clean transition to the ceiling but also concealed the top track for a more integrated look. We also fitted two custom wall jambs on either side of the opening, ensuring the frame was securely anchored and gave a seamless finish.
The Result
What was once an open, undefined section of the home is now a fully functional guest bedroom, thanks to a smart layout, clean install, and premium materials. The room divider looks as though it’s always been part of the original build—exactly the kind of outcome we aim for on every project.
The client was thrilled, not just with the aesthetics, but with the functionality. They now have a dedicated space for visitors, complete with privacy, light, and a quiet separation from the main living areas.
